Gideon calls a warning as she surges forward to grab him (or the vine; she hadn't thought it through), but it's too late. Her fists raise in preparation to punch Palamedes's way to freedom, but she's thwarted when a vine wraps around her cloak and yanks her back.
She turns to tear herself free, stepping over another slithering through the grass, and when she looks back, the vines are crossing over one another to form a new, horrible wall. Gideon grabs at them, trying to pull them apart; they begin to snake around her wrist, and she has to yank herself free instead.
"Sextus," she yells, trying to spot him through the rapidly closing gaps. Her footsteps are already receding, boots turning up dirt with the force of it. "Just — don't get eaten. I'll come around — I'll find you!"
