Memory mechanics

Memory mechanics

Memory Loss

The core of Well's memory loss mechanics are two questions:

  • What parts of you are core, and what are learned?

  • What changes when you don't have evidence for your beliefs about yourself?

When entering Well, characters remember basic skills (walking, talking, counting) as long as they had those skills in canon. If the character is from a species who has other basic skills, like if they tend to communicate through telepathy, they can also start with that skill.

Mental illnesses can also stick with characters if you choose. If a character has depression, they will still feel depressed, but not have context for that feeling or experience.

General impressions and beliefs of the self can also stay. For example, if your character has a deep-seated belief that they are a bad person, they may still think that, but have no context for why they're a bad person.

Aside from that, they remember the memories that you chose for them to regain in your app. They don't necessarily know anything is wrong, and will most likely be accepting of their situation and location until they can put together the pieces that something is amiss.

How will I keep my character IC without their memories?
You know your character: boil them down to their core parts. Who are they without their memories? What are their core personality traits? If they usually hide their feelings, but are a generally emotional person, they may not remember that they should hide their feelings, and show more emotion than they do in canon. If they are an inherently cruel person who has tempered themself to be palatable to society, that cruelty may come out more. How you play them is up to you.

Try to be true to your character, but since they are without many impactful experiences, your interpretation is yours. Make sure that you're having fun, and that your interpretation isn't impacting other people's ability to have fun in the setting.

How does memory loss manifest in my character?
Memory loss manifests inconsistently across characters, meaning that you can take it in the direction that works best for you and your character. The only limit is that your character can't know specifics about their life or canon without allocating memory points to those memories.

Your character could be a blank slate, with only the memories you allocated to them, or they can have ideas and opinions about how the world works, but simply not know why they think that way. For example, Luke Skywalker might assume that the universe has many planets, many with their own cultures and societies, while Frodo might assume that there is only one world, and on that world there are different types of people who are separated by their own cultures.

Characters can also keep associations and feelings about ideas or institutions. For example, Luke Skywalker might have negative associations with imperialism and empires, but not know why.

What happens when my character tries to remember something they've lost?
If your character tries to put together the pieces and think about something they've lost, they'll experience shortness of breath, intense headache, and, if they don't stop, bleeding from the mouth, eyes, and nose. If they persist beyond that, they may simply tear themselves apart, ending in character death. They will wake back up in the usual character death way in Well, feeling placid and having lost another memory.

What happens when a character is told about something they should or could remember?
If your character is told about something that happened to them by someone, but you haven't allocated memory points to that memory, the character can't remember it themself. If they try, they experience intense headache and nose bleed. However, they can know that someone has told them this, like being told a story about yourself as a child that you don't remember yourself, so they have a memory of the story, but not of the experience itself.

What happens when my character regains a memory?
When you first app to Well, your character starts with the memories you give them in your app. These feel like normal memories that have always been there.

If you regain memories post-app, your character's regain will be triggered by something in their environment. It could be something familiar on a book, a shape of a cloud, or the NPCs pantomiming part of the memory. Feel free to use the NPCs for this. They won't play our the exact memory, but may do a special handshake or gesture, or say a particular word that triggers the memory.

Once the memory is triggered, your character experiences excruciating pain, like a horrible migraine, as they remember for the first time. This last for about a minute before it goes away like the pain was never there.

How can my character remember a relationship and not the experiences related to that relationship?
Choosing to remember a relationship will be accompanied by some less-impactful memories about the other person. Your character may remember their favorite color, or that they used to travel to school together. They won't remember major fights or declarations of feelings, etc. Those major memories will need to regained through a major memory regain.

How do I trade in memory points for memories?
You can trade your memory points in on the memory points page. In your top-level, include your initial application memory points.

Can I change how I want to allocate my memory points after I've submitted them?
No, once submitted, memory points have been used. If you want to remove a memory, you can do that through your character dying in-game.

Will I be able to regain memories beyond the ones in my app?
Yes, memory points will be offered in specific events, generally once per event. You can trade in an event thread for memory point(s) once per event (ie. if you thread a prompt multiple times, you can only get the memory points for one of those times).

Can my character experience a memory in an event prompt without regaining the memory?
Yes, a character can experience a memory without regaining it. They will only remember the experience of the event prompt, and not the memory itself as they initially experienced it.

Does my character have to regain a memory in the event prompt they get the points from?
No, not necessarily. If you don't want to use points to regain a memory in a prompt, you can bank those points for later.

Can my character regain items from home?
No, items can't be regained.

Can my character regain a pet?
No, animals, creatures, or sentient beings can't be regained.

Memory points

Memory points are an OOC mechanic to regain memories or skills. Memory points are available on your application, and will be given out during certain events. You can trade in your memory points on this page for regains.

Memory points are applied to regains. Regains cost between 1 and 3 memory points. Use your best judgement for where your regain falls, with 1 point regaining less consequential memories, and 3 regaining the most consequential.

Memories can be as: minor memories, major memories, relationships, or skills.

Minor memories: 1 point

Minor memories are memories that wouldn't be considered to be turning points in a character's life. Minor memories could be a routine they had, a nice day they had, a low point, etc.

Major memories: 2 points

Major memories are important moments in a character's life: a big breakup, an award, a big battle, meeting someone important. These are moments that define your character, the things that they might mention as things that made them who they are.

Relationships: 2-3 points

If you choose to regain the memories of a relationship, you can choose to have your character remember: the core of the relationship, what it means to them, minor moments relating to the relationship; or who the relationship is with and that that person is important, but not the context about why.

To fully remember a relationship, you would need to put points toward the relationship core, the trappings, and any major moments in the relationship through memory points. This means that your character will most likely never remember the full context of any relationship they had in canon.

Relationship cores
The core of a relationship is all of the feelings, minor moments, and context around a relationship. Choose the core of a relationship if you want your character to feel all the warm fuzzies / angry fuzzies related to someone, without them knowing where to direct those feelings.

Relationship trappings
The trappings of the relationship is the outer trappings: who the person is, their name, your character's relationship to them, without knowing all the context. Choose the trappings of the relationship if you want your character to know someone is important, but not quite know why. They could remember how the interact with the person, but not know why.

Skills: 1-3 points

Skills are things that your character worked to be good at. The cost is dependent on how impactful the skill is, and how good your character is at it. Regaining a skill regains your character's mastery of that skill, up to their canonpoint.

For example: Luke Skywalker could regain his mastery of the Force, up to his mastery level at his canon point. He wouldn't regain any skills he hasn't perfected past that point. If Luke's canonpoint was the end of a New Hope, this would cost 1 point, based on his mastery. If his canonpoint was the end of the series, it would cost 3 points.

Non-magical/powerful skills will top out at 2 points, but powered or supernatural skills may cost 3 if your character is a master at it.

Using points

Reply to that comment with this form filled out to use points. Proofs are for proving you participated in an event that offered points as a reward.

Deaths

If your character dies in Well, they lose one memory point and the memory allocated to that point. It's up to you which point they lose. If you only have 2 or 3 point memories, you can choose to make one of those memories foggy, or make a power or skill less potent.

ariane yeong | signalis

[personal profile] toteninsel 2023-05-01 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Character name: Ariane Yeong
Player name: floral

Initial memories
Major memory: 2 points.
Ariane will remember signing up to work for the Penrose program, and the routine of her first 225 cycles (days) aboard the ship. Her time on the ship is fairly monotonous: she pilots it, paints and journals in her free time, and otherwise avoids talking to the Elster unit on board.

Major memory: 2 points.
Ariane will remember transferring to school on urban Rotfront, and her day-to-day routine there. In particular, it is characterized by a strict and conformist educational program, and Ariane does not get along with most of her classmates or teachers. She is bullied often and viciously.

Relationship core: 3 points.
Ariane will remember that she made a promise to someone, that the person she made a promise to is incredibly important, and that Ariane must work to fulfill it at all costs. Aside from monotonous day-to-day experiences aboard the Penrose, this is all Ariane will remember of Elster, her beloved.

Skill: 2 points.
Ariane will remember that she is bioresonant, which means she has supernatural abilities related to psychic powers (as described above). Ariane will not remember how to consciously control these abilities, however, so they will only flare up in times of great emotional stress.

Skill: 1 point.
Ariane is a skilled painter, preferring landscapes especially.

makoto naegi | dangan ronpa

[personal profile] victim 2023-05-01 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
Character name: Makoto Naegi
Player name: panda

Initial memories
Relationship trapping: 2 points.
He remembers he has a family consisting of his parents and his sister, and with some focus he remembers their names.

Major memory 2 points.
He remembers his worst day ever except that he doesn't remember clearly anyone he had a relationship with (like the friend he bumped into or that he was hoping to see Sayaka that night on tv; he'll just remember he had an important thing to watch that he missed). He will remember that he got accepted to Hope's Peak, but this memory does not extend to him actually going to the school or any part of the killing game. This means he will believe he is 16 years old, which is similar to his situation in the killing game, where everyone participating could not remember two years of their time at the school. I believe this is a major memory because it sets in motion his character evolution in regards to his (unlucky) luck and becoming the Ultimate Hope.

Skill: Keen Intellect 1 point.
Has the ability to notice discrepancies, inconsistencies, and pick up on patterns that may not be apparent.

The Curious Cat | RWBY

[personal profile] curiouslycursed 2023-05-01 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Character name:
Player name: Lucy
Initial memories
Memory: 2 points.
Someone has abandoned them. They don't know who, and they don't know why.

Memory: 1 point

They have a vague recollection that they don't like humans, but they do not know why.

Relationship: 2 points.
They remember Ruby, and that she is from a world separate from their own. They remember that they believe that she, like the rest of humanity, is weak and confused, and that they wanted to wear her down.

Relationship: 2 points
They remember being Jaune's guide on an adventure, and feel this was a strange choice. They're sure they had a reason, though, even if they're not sure what it was.

Skill: 1 point.
The Cat can levitate - so walk, run, tumble, float, and generally just hang out midair.

Skill: 2 points.
Invisibility - the Cat can turn fully or partially invisible.
hasapoint: an old woman's hand proffering a sword hilt (Default)

Need | Heralds of Valdemar

[personal profile] hasapoint 2023-05-01 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
Character name: Need (nee Lashan)
Player name: Joys
Initial memories
Type of regain: 1 point.
Memory: awareness that she's been dead for a long time and in that time she's forgotten many things, regained them, and forgotten them again. This is normal and inevitable. She does remember that she's regained the name she had as a human, Sister Lashan.

Type of regain: 1 point.
Skill: Weapons making. She knows something about the properties of materials and how to modify them and make them work together. Need can wrap the end of an iron bar and give it a little bit of edge, she can improvise a spear, she can make a functioning sling out of braided cords. Making arrows and bows, and actually making and mending swords, is beyond her.

Type of regain: 3 points.
Skill: Using a sling to launch stones accurately and at killing speed. However, because Need has a great approximation of an elderly body, she can only sling a few stones at a time before her shoulder forces her to stop and rest, and her range is less than a hearty young slinger's.

Type of regain: 1 point.
Skill: Healing. Need can lay on hands and stop bleeding, purge infection, ease swelling, and just in general accelerate the body's natural processes so a fresh wound seems like it's been healing for a few days. It is however uncomfortable, even painful, while she's doing it, and doing it tires her and makes both her and her patient hungry even though she doesn't normally have to eat.

Type of regain: 2 points.
Relationship: The core of her relationship with Vena, her foster daughter/apprentice when she was alive. She protected, taught and nurtured this girl, but in a moment of horrifying loss also betrayed her in some sense, and then guided her again, but their relationship was different and darker afterwards.

Type of regain: 1 point.
Skill: Just a bit of ability to use swords and things that approximate them. She is very hampered by, again, being an old lady; she's not as fast and has less flexibility and energy compared to younger people, but she knows basic forms and footwork.

Type of regain: 1 points.
Skill: keeping the majority of her powers shielded, locked down and all but inert. She can sense magic and people's emotions when up close, which is also functionally a form of darksight that makes living and magical things stand out. If she takes down her psychic shielding without regaining more skill, she will be intrusively bombarded with the thoughts and feelings of everyone around her, a loud and chaotic welter of information. At best she can glean a thing or two from the noise before getting overwhelmed and having to lock down again, probably with a headache.

[personal profile] mycrosstobear 2023-05-01 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Character name: Nicholas D. Wolfwood
Player name: Orlando
Initial memories

Skill 3 points.
Marksmanship, including how to use a wide variety of firearms that don't exist in this town.

Skill 2 points.
Hand-to-hand combat.

Minor Memory 1 point.
His routine as one of the older kids in the orphanage - chores, looking after younger kids, helping out with animals, etc.

Skill 2 points.
How to be a priest. This will be patchy (he'll likely think this is because of the amnesia, but in fact reflects that he was never actually trained), but include some specific knowledge: how to hold a funeral service, apparently random bits of scripture, most of how to hold a regular service.

Relationship Trappings 2 points.
Vash the Stampede. Wolfwood will know Vash was a travel companion, that they often bickered, and that in spite of that they were close friends, but none of the actual events they went through or how and why they met in the first place.

Vic | The Princess Beard

[personal profile] masculinitea 2023-05-01 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Memory: 2 points.
Being a little colt laying at his mother's side and conjuring a cupcake which she adores, only to have his father knock it out of his hand and say no son of his is such a mare. A suddenly fearful little Vic asks why his dad doesn't like him, and his mother cries into his hair.

Memory: 1 point.
Vic remembers working out in a gym frequented by other centaurs, bigger and older and buffer than he is. Admiring them but also feeling shame that he is Different and secretly mareish.

Memory: 1 point.
Humans and other non-centaurs are always dismayed or disgusted hearing his full name.

Skill 3 points.
Working out! It's real hard for a centaur to get abs! He will just have to make do without gym equipment, but he knows all the exercises he needs to maintain his physique. It's a lot of work!

Skill? Memory? 1 point.
Vic knows he can consciously conjure pretty much any teatime food (or... tea) he'd like into his hands. He doesn't remember he can conjure a lot more and at much more distance, that can be a surprise.

Skill: 2 points.
fight'n. Vic doesn't remember how to use weapons and of course he can't bite like a horse, but he sure can kick like one.

Initial memories

Relationship core: 3 points.
Jon knows that he was manipulated, used, and betrayed by someone close to him. He remembers the day-to-day mundanity of wanting that man's approval, and the seething, devastated ache after it went hideously wrong-- but none of the details.

Relationship core: 3 points.
Jon knows that he had someone he loved and trusted deeply. He remembers aching to run away together, fighting to be reunited, and finally relaxing together in a moment of reprieve. There is a profound guilt underscoring this relationship, as though he made some terrible mistake.

Major memory: 2 points.
Jon remembers watching his bully die when he was eight years old-- dragged out of the world by a monster which had meant to get Jon. He remembers that no one ever believed him.

Minor memory: 1 point.
Jon remembers bits and pieces of his routine as a paranormal researcher. He can recall categorizing supernatural occurrences, and some themes from the categories of canon, but no names or details.

Minor memory: 1 point.
Jon doesn't know why, but he's aware of a profound guilt and self-loathing: he knows that he is somehow wrong or unsafe.

MINOR: 4 points - Bundling these together! Ryan is going to remember that he has 4 siblings. There won't be a ton of detail or specifics, but what he does remember is the general vibe and his place in the age order. I'm also calling this minor because they don't have canon names, only half of them have canon lines, and they aren't actually in Ryan's life anymore (he doesn't know that though). His memory is based on the one he and Min-Gi saw together and won't have information beyond the following:

Oldest: Kimberly - Six years older than Ryan. Got along with her best.
Second Oldest: Nancy - Four years older than Ryan. Steals her records.
Middle: Ryan :) Kind of lonely, because his older and younger siblings were closer in age to each other than him.
Second Youngest: Zach - Three years younger than Ryan. Went through a long biting phase.
Youngest: Davey - Four years younger than Ryan. Can and will cry at the drop of a hat.

Emerald Sustrai | RWBY

[personal profile] hallucinogem 2023-05-29 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Major memory: 2 points.
Emerald grew up on the backstreets of Vacuo, which informed a lot of the cynical views she can sometimes hold towards greater society. She knows that things don't usually come for free (but doesn't necessarily agree with it) and can be mistrusting of handouts, but without having that constantly reinforced it's not as much of a core part of her worldview.

Major memory: 2 points.
Cinder Fall is the one who gripped her tight and raised her from perdition. She offered her a clear path upward, out of the backstreets, and even if it seemed too good to be true, Emerald was desperate to take it. Surely it could only mean good things for her future.

Relationship core: 2 points.
The relationship core for Salem, the evil witch and primary antagonist of RWBY. This would involve a lot of feelings of terror and self-doubt, a begrudging desire to do well and force herself to fit Salem's mold, and hints of betrayal as Emerald knows that Salem could never have her full loyalty.

Major memory: 2 points.
Knowledge that she no longer works for the person who was making her feel the way she did in the previous relationship core, and that she was rescued by somebody. She doesn't know who, but she knows she was saved and that the feelings she has towards Salem can be put in the past—and probably safely.

Skill: 2 points.
Emerald is a solid marksman, though she wouldn't find the weapons she prefers to use here in Well, probably. Her twin automatic pistols unfold into chains with weighted sickle blades on the end (kusarigama); she can bind opponents or use the chains for traversal, and she's not afraid to use them as handheld scythes either. She's been training with these weapons her whole life and considers herself pretty skilled with them, but she only really knows that she's skilled with guns, because combining weapons like that would just be silly.

DEATH

Death: No link as it's being handwaved due to time constraints but Darin will have died in week 3 of this month against his doppelganger. They'll be fighting to the death and both will succumb to their injuries.
Memory lost: Darin will lose the memory he actually just recovered in the graveyard pertaining to his brother and the god he is the reincarnation of!
