Memory mechanics

Memory mechanics

Memory Loss

The core of Well's memory loss mechanics are two questions:

  • What parts of you are core, and what are learned?

  • What changes when you don't have evidence for your beliefs about yourself?

When entering Well, characters remember basic skills (walking, talking, counting) as long as they had those skills in canon. If the character is from a species who has other basic skills, like if they tend to communicate through telepathy, they can also start with that skill.

Mental illnesses can also stick with characters if you choose. If a character has depression, they will still feel depressed, but not have context for that feeling or experience.

General impressions and beliefs of the self can also stay. For example, if your character has a deep-seated belief that they are a bad person, they may still think that, but have no context for why they're a bad person.

Aside from that, they remember the memories that you chose for them to regain in your app. They don't necessarily know anything is wrong, and will most likely be accepting of their situation and location until they can put together the pieces that something is amiss.

How will I keep my character IC without their memories?
You know your character: boil them down to their core parts. Who are they without their memories? What are their core personality traits? If they usually hide their feelings, but are a generally emotional person, they may not remember that they should hide their feelings, and show more emotion than they do in canon. If they are an inherently cruel person who has tempered themself to be palatable to society, that cruelty may come out more. How you play them is up to you.

Try to be true to your character, but since they are without many impactful experiences, your interpretation is yours. Make sure that you're having fun, and that your interpretation isn't impacting other people's ability to have fun in the setting.

How does memory loss manifest in my character?
Memory loss manifests inconsistently across characters, meaning that you can take it in the direction that works best for you and your character. The only limit is that your character can't know specifics about their life or canon without allocating memory points to those memories.

Your character could be a blank slate, with only the memories you allocated to them, or they can have ideas and opinions about how the world works, but simply not know why they think that way. For example, Luke Skywalker might assume that the universe has many planets, many with their own cultures and societies, while Frodo might assume that there is only one world, and on that world there are different types of people who are separated by their own cultures.

Characters can also keep associations and feelings about ideas or institutions. For example, Luke Skywalker might have negative associations with imperialism and empires, but not know why.

What happens when my character tries to remember something they've lost?
If your character tries to put together the pieces and think about something they've lost, they'll experience shortness of breath, intense headache, and, if they don't stop, bleeding from the mouth, eyes, and nose. If they persist beyond that, they may simply tear themselves apart, ending in character death. They will wake back up in the usual character death way in Well, feeling placid and having lost another memory.

What happens when a character is told about something they should or could remember?
If your character is told about something that happened to them by someone, but you haven't allocated memory points to that memory, the character can't remember it themself. If they try, they experience intense headache and nose bleed. However, they can know that someone has told them this, like being told a story about yourself as a child that you don't remember yourself, so they have a memory of the story, but not of the experience itself.

What happens when my character regains a memory?
When you first app to Well, your character starts with the memories you give them in your app. These feel like normal memories that have always been there.

If you regain memories post-app, your character's regain will be triggered by something in their environment. It could be something familiar on a book, a shape of a cloud, or the NPCs pantomiming part of the memory. Feel free to use the NPCs for this. They won't play our the exact memory, but may do a special handshake or gesture, or say a particular word that triggers the memory.

Once the memory is triggered, your character experiences excruciating pain, like a horrible migraine, as they remember for the first time. This last for about a minute before it goes away like the pain was never there.

How can my character remember a relationship and not the experiences related to that relationship?
Choosing to remember a relationship will be accompanied by some less-impactful memories about the other person. Your character may remember their favorite color, or that they used to travel to school together. They won't remember major fights or declarations of feelings, etc. Those major memories will need to regained through a major memory regain.

How do I trade in memory points for memories?
You can trade your memory points in on the memory points page. In your top-level, include your initial application memory points.

Can I change how I want to allocate my memory points after I've submitted them?
No, once submitted, memory points have been used. If you want to remove a memory, you can do that through your character dying in-game.

Will I be able to regain memories beyond the ones in my app?
Yes, memory points will be offered in specific events, generally once per event. You can trade in an event thread for memory point(s) once per event (ie. if you thread a prompt multiple times, you can only get the memory points for one of those times).

Can my character experience a memory in an event prompt without regaining the memory?
Yes, a character can experience a memory without regaining it. They will only remember the experience of the event prompt, and not the memory itself as they initially experienced it.

Does my character have to regain a memory in the event prompt they get the points from?
No, not necessarily. If you don't want to use points to regain a memory in a prompt, you can bank those points for later.

Can my character regain items from home?
No, items can't be regained.

Can my character regain a pet?
No, animals, creatures, or sentient beings can't be regained.

Memory points

Memory points are an OOC mechanic to regain memories or skills. Memory points are available on your application, and will be given out during certain events. You can trade in your memory points on this page for regains.

Memory points are applied to regains. Regains cost between 1 and 3 memory points. Use your best judgement for where your regain falls, with 1 point regaining less consequential memories, and 3 regaining the most consequential.

Memories can be as: minor memories, major memories, relationships, or skills.

Minor memories: 1 point

Minor memories are memories that wouldn't be considered to be turning points in a character's life. Minor memories could be a routine they had, a nice day they had, a low point, etc.

Major memories: 2 points

Major memories are important moments in a character's life: a big breakup, an award, a big battle, meeting someone important. These are moments that define your character, the things that they might mention as things that made them who they are.

Relationships: 2-3 points

If you choose to regain the memories of a relationship, you can choose to have your character remember: the core of the relationship, what it means to them, minor moments relating to the relationship; or who the relationship is with and that that person is important, but not the context about why.

To fully remember a relationship, you would need to put points toward the relationship core, the trappings, and any major moments in the relationship through memory points. This means that your character will most likely never remember the full context of any relationship they had in canon.

Relationship cores
The core of a relationship is all of the feelings, minor moments, and context around a relationship. Choose the core of a relationship if you want your character to feel all the warm fuzzies / angry fuzzies related to someone, without them knowing where to direct those feelings.

Relationship trappings
The trappings of the relationship is the outer trappings: who the person is, their name, your character's relationship to them, without knowing all the context. Choose the trappings of the relationship if you want your character to know someone is important, but not quite know why. They could remember how the interact with the person, but not know why.

Skills: 1-3 points

Skills are things that your character worked to be good at. The cost is dependent on how impactful the skill is, and how good your character is at it. Regaining a skill regains your character's mastery of that skill, up to their canonpoint.

For example: Luke Skywalker could regain his mastery of the Force, up to his mastery level at his canon point. He wouldn't regain any skills he hasn't perfected past that point. If Luke's canonpoint was the end of a New Hope, this would cost 1 point, based on his mastery. If his canonpoint was the end of the series, it would cost 3 points.

Non-magical/powerful skills will top out at 2 points, but powered or supernatural skills may cost 3 if your character is a master at it.

Deaths

If your character dies in Well, they lose one memory point and the memory allocated to that point. It's up to you which point they lose. If you only have 2 or 3 point memories, you can choose to make one of those memories foggy, or make a power or skill less potent.

Re: Questions

[personal profile] hellonspectacles 2023-01-02 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Apologies if these questions are weird—I’ve never played a memloss game before and don’t have a good sense of what’s “standard” so there is a very good chance that I’m just not aware of obvious things!

1) How much basic cultural/technical/social/geographical knowledge would a character hang onto? Examples: Would someone from Earth in 2022 know what a car or a computer is? Or, to piggyback on your Star Wars example: would Luke Skywalker recognize that Tattooine is a planet, even if he doesn’t remember anything about it? Would he at least understand in a basic way that people live on different planets in his universe? Would references to empire give him bad vibes even if he doesn’t know why?

This isn’t meant to be a barrage of specific questions, I’m just trying to get a sense of vibes! I can also get more specific for the character I’m thinking of apping if that would be more helpful.

2) What happens if someone is told about a memory they haven’t regained, or figures out something about themselves or their past via logic? I’m particularly thinking about if two characters from the same universe talk and realize they have complementary memories! I can also see someone deducing, say, that they are a mage if 1) they know what mages are and 2) realize they can do mage stuff. Would things like that also cause nosebleeds and the like?

Relationship core with Yuri: 2 points.
The memory of his long friendship with Yuri. Flynn will remember the fact that there is someone he grew up with who is very important to him. All the feelings that come with this relationship, none of the details!

Swordsmanship skills: 3 points.

Horatio Hornblower | Hornblower

[personal profile] whisted 2023-01-27 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Character name: Horatio Hornblower
Player name: Qi
Initial memories
Relationship core: 3 points.
Captain Sir Edward Pellew - Pellew was the first captain to make Horatio feel useful and well-suited to his purpose. The vibes are a settled sense of competence and a vague desire to cleave to authority figures.

Skill: 2 points.
Card-counting - Horatio's system isn't terribly elegant, but he learned to keep and count a deck in his head at a fairly young age to play whist (and ultimately uses that skill to keep himself fed during the Peace). It's rooted in his general maths-brain, but it's a specific application that comes very naturally from constant practice.

Skill: 2 points.
17th-18th century first aid - Horatio's father was a country doctor, and he absolutely had to be the extra pair of hands when things got dicey now and then. He's not an amazing healer by any stretch, but he's good with gore and quick with Ye Olde Remedies (and just binding things up neatly).

Skill: 1 points.
Boat knots - Horatio isn't that great at them, but he's good enough to trust them when there's not an entire sloop having to be held in place by 'em!

Minor memory: 1 points.
Reading Ovid - Horatio had to translate quite a bit of Latin and Greek as a youth for the school he should have dropped out of but hadn't yet. He'll have a strong sense impression of working on his translations, with scraps and fragments of The Metamorphoses.

Minor memory: 1 points.
Home - Horatio is from a small coastal town in Kent. There's a lot of cool overcast sensations of the sea and the ramble of Romney Marsh (and, of course, of chasing and chased by Romney sheep).

At Molly’s canon point of episode 26, he is skilled with one handed swords. Since he was not that far into campaign 2 before his death and it being non-magical, capping it at one point.

Type of regain:Major memory 2 points.
Molly woke up and dug his way out of a grave. He was empty and unable to say anything but empty until he was found. That ache and terrible inability to be or think, is something he will remember.

Type of regain: Relationship 2 points.
The core of his relationship with Gustav. Gustav gave him a code of conduct to follow. Helped him be a person. He has a deep love and respect for the man. He won’t remember his name, only that he owes him and what he learned from him.

Type of regain: Major memory - 2 points.
He knows the name of The Mighty Nein but not what and why they feel so important. Only that he wants to find them. He wants to know who they are.

Type of regain: Skill 1 point.
Tarot readings and performance! His circus shit.

Type of regain: Relationship - 2 points.
The core of his relationship with his best friend Yasha. She cared about him and was fine with him being as he was. He respected her too. He wanted her to find happiness. He won’t remember her name either.

Skill: 1 point.
Standard Kingdom Hearts parkour skills. He can run along walls for a bit, jump good, remembers doing that in Twilight Town.

Major memory: 3 points.
Roxas remembers the fake memories DiZ implanted in him: that he's a normal kid from a town called Twilight Town, with a hazy sense that he's lived there forever, some hazy childhood memories that don't really hold up to scrutiny, and a lasting friendship with Hayner, Pence, and Olette.

Memory core: 2 points.
Memory core of his friendship with Axel: he knows there's someone really important to him who was formative to his sense of self, and who he left behind or hurt somehow. No idea who is, but associates the taste of sea-salt with them.

Minor memory: 2 points.
Roxas remembers some of his "final" week in Twilight Town: he remembers weird things happening to him, and specifically he remembers the weird wiggly white creatures that attacked him, and all the photos of him disappearing.

Minor Memory: 1 point
An everyday memory of inhabiting Camilla’s body and looking in the mirror to see her face looking back at him.

Minor Memory: 1 point
Studying for an exam. It would have seemed Very Important at the time, but in the grand scheme of things, it was a fairly mundane exam.

Minor Memory: 1 point
A meeting with We Suffer to report on the activity of Troia Cell. While emotionally fraught, in the period this meeting occurs, the conversation itself would have been relatively mundane. Would have included:

Mayoi Ayase | Ensemble Stars!!

[personal profile] rottencactus 2023-01-28 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
Character name: Mayoi Ayase
Player name: Jami
Initial memories

Type of regain: 2 points.
Mayoi remembers that he can sing and that there are songs he knows. However he cannot recall any titles or words, he only knows melodies and tunes and that, whatever they are, they are important.

Type of regain: 2 points.
Mayoi remembers that he can dance and that he is very good at it, actually. He will not recall much of any specific routines other than a few steps here and there that seem to fit together, but he is capable of coming up with choreography if he wants to sit down and make some up himself.

Type of regain: 1 point.
He is afraid of cars. There's a brief memory of a coast line and of a guard rail rapidly flashing past him and then this feeling of being lightheaded. weird!

Type of regain: 2 points.
A distinct memory of being somewhere dim and underground, though strangely furnished. He remembers being young, reading a book, and then suddenly hearing the muffled sounds of someone singing. Where is it coming from? he thinks, as he shoves himself into an unlit, unused fire place and starts to climb up the shaft, the music getting louder and louder.

Type of regain: 1 point.
Mayoi has an unshakable feeling that something is wrong or "other" about him, but will have no idea why. Something that may make him question if he is human or not.

Type of regain: 1 point.
He recalls that he likes to grow his own tea because it's easier for him to cater to his delicate palette that way. It will help reinforce his assumption that he's kind of on the sickly side.

Type of regain: 1 point.
A weird, almost encyclopedia knowledge of folklore, ghost stories, and dark fiction. He will know nothing of its context, for example, he can recall a story from greek mythology, but he won't actually know what "Greek" means or that Greece is a country with its own history. He will recall several Shakespearean plays but he can't tell you anything about who wrote them. Japanese folklore will feel more familiar to him, but he still won’t have any additional context.

Type of regain: 2 points.
Relationship core: Akane Tsunemori

Ryan Akagi | Infinity Train

[personal profile] chickenchoicejudy 2023-01-29 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Character name: Ryan Akagi
Player name: Billie Sue
Initial memories:
Major Memory: 2 points.
Buried deep in Ryan's subconscious, cobbled together from stories told to him about the day he was born and vague recollections that no one actually would believe, is a significant memory. So significant that it made its way onto the tape he shares with Min on the Infinity Train of their memories together, despite the argument that people can't recall that far back in their lives.

Ryan remembers being a baby. He remembers being swaddled up and laid in a bassinette, and looking around at his surroundings the way a baby tends to do. Absorbing this new world like a little bean-shaped sponge.

He wasn't alone though. Next to him, another baby was laid down, sound asleep. Ryan was a newborn, too little for words or ways to describe the feeling, but having someone next to him was...comforting. He eased, and felt calm enough to go back to sleep himself.

It's a very fuzzy and foggy memory, but one association sticks out - this other baby is someone very, very important to him. But, he doesn't know who.

Minor Memory: 1 points.
Oranges are good for you. Someone used to send him off with oranges, or sometimes leave them for him already peeled.

The funny thing is, he doesn't particularly remember oranges being his favorite? But they were important. A sign of affection and care.

Minor Memory: 1 points.
The phrase Chicken Choice Judy will cross Ryan's mind now and again. Does he know what it is? No. Does he know what it means? Also no. The closest he can get before feeling ill is a mental image of a cartoony chicken with a pink wig.

But it still crosses his mind now and then - it's kind of catchy, right?

Minor Memory: 1 points.
Just a sentence that echoes in his mind in dark moments sometimes. "It's over, Ryan!". It's accompanied by a door slam, and even though Ryan doesn't know who said that, he remembers that he wasn't sad that it happened with this person specifically.

He was sad that it happened, again.

Minor Memory: 1 points.
Post war American food is disgusting. He has vague memories of joking around about that, but not a whole lot of context. What war? Is he even American?

Major Memory: 2 points.
Ryan has been in a Wild West setting before. The context isn't there anymore, but he knows that he was being chased by a number of large, insect cowboys and sheriffs and things like that - human-size at least, all speaking English. They were pretty pissed off and trying to arrest Ryan and whoever he was with. They even wound up running into a saloon to try and hide.

Evidently it worked out because he isn't currently in bug jail, but he doesn't actually know how that story ends or why they were trying to arrest him in the first place. This is the only memory that's more of a vibe, to have the setting actually feel weirdly familiar. He doesn't think he was from there (since he's not a bug) but he's definitely been somewhere like this before.

Major Memory: 2 points.
Ryan remembers pounding against a transparent red door, calling out to...someone, presumably. He remembers being terrified for them and maybe even a little guilty. He bangs on the door, but no one hears him.

"I won't leave you!" is what he remembers saying, yelling, pleading. It's a choice he's making, he's choosing to stay with this person who can't see or hear him, and can't see the monster slinking behind him.

"I won't leave you!" as something clatters and whirrs on the palm of his hand.

Character name: Reyson
Player name: Basil
Initial memories:

Type of regain: 1 points.
Recollection of sea shanties, and the homes built into the cliffsides where he would watch ships pass by.

Type of regain: 3 points.
Taking care of his ailing father in those same cliffside dwellings, with the knowledge that this has been happening for a very long time.

Type of regain: 2 points.
Trying to help Tibarn and the others of the Hawk clan in one of their pirate raids-- with Tibarn ordering him to stay back.

Type of regain: 2 points.
The knowledge that he's an empath and some of the understanding that comes with it... at least enough to know that he's not just crazy for his emotional and physical reactions, even if he doesn't know everything that it entails.

Type of regain: 2 points.
Singing, as well as his general musical expertise. This includes playing a harp and being able to harmonize with nearly every song. However, this does not include knowledge of his magic or how it affects people.

The magic will remain, but only enough to give the listener the energy to do the work of two people-- not enough to restore corrupted minds or revive dying forests.

He remembers taking control of the academy as its sole leader. He can recall giving speeches, ineptly comforting distressed teens, and taking pride in his ownership of a fantasy high school.

Major memory: 2 points.
Kalvaxus remembers his undead body being hollowed out for use as a ship by zombie pirates. It was very bad. He's going to pretend he can't remember this one.

Relationship core: 2 points.
He remembers his day-to-day spite, fury, and begrudging respect for a man he spent centuries at the side of. He cannot begin to understand why he would've stayed in that relationship.

Points remaining: 3

Character name: Nona
Player name: floral
Initial memories

Minor memory: 1 point.
Nona used to go to school every day, where she worked as a Teacher's Aide and participated in the Hour of Science.

Relationship core: 3 points.
Nona will know that she had a painful relationship in the past, but not who the relationship was with, the nature of the relationship (other than it's something she doesn't want to remember), or why the relationship was bad. This will be the only memory she retains of Alecto's relationship with John Gaius.

Relationship trappings: 3 points.
Nona will remember that she lived with people named Pyrrha, Palamedes, and Camilla. Other than that, she does not know why they are important to her or how she feels about them.

Skill: 2 points.
Nona can throw "tantrums," in which she becomes significantly stronger/more violent than a person her size can ordinarily be. She is not a master of this skill and is generally quite embarrassed about it.

Skill: 1 point.
Nona likes to pet and is good at taking care of dogs.

Character name: Shiro
Player name: Red
Initial memories

Major Memory: Alien Abduction 2 points.
Once upon a time, Shiro and his crew got abducted by aliens. He remembers the attempt to flee, remembers being brought onto some sort of massive prison construction, and asking for them to be let go. Beyond that, there's nothing - pretty much like canon, actually. He remembers being terrified, not only for himself, but for the people with him, and shocked, horrified, that not only do aliens exist, but they're bad people, too. What a letdown.

Relationship Core: Brother Adoption 2 points.
He remembers there was a teen he'd taken under his wing, so to speak. Not the circumstances around it, not the specifics. There was a skilled teenager who needed help, Shiro offered, and they were like brothers. They weren't related by blood, but it didn't matter. They bonded! Bromance!

Minor Memory: Desert Speed Racer 1 points.
The exact memory is nonspecific - the circumstances, the date/time. He will remember riding a hoverbike, through the desert, recklessly. He will remember he is racing. There are positive emotions associated with it - excitement, entertainment, adrenaline. It's a competition with someone, or multiple someones, and he's delighted to be there.

Major Memory: Flight training 2 points.
Shiro remembers being able to pilot space ships. He remembers he was in some kind of flight school, was officially a pilot, and flew missions. Grasping at more beyond those things doesn't result in any more information. If he sat in a cockpit, he could fly something. But that probably won't happen here.

Minor Memory: Space Goo 1 points.
Space goo is gross. It looks like green jello, it tastes like a protein bar if you mixed it with fruit punch cold medicine. That's it, that's the extent of the memory.

Major Memory: Fighting skills 2 points.
Much like in canon, Shiro won't remember how he knows his self-defense skills. Only that they exist, that they come from muscle memory. He won't even realize he has these skills until they're absolutely necessary. If he really tries to think about it, he'll get the recall headache, and just have to rely on trusting his muscle memory to get him through for a while.

If I'd like for my character to only remember the faces of people, but literally nothing else about them and their relationship, would this be considered "Relationship trappings"? And would it have to be one relationship trapping per person's face, or can it be a group?

For more context: Mina has her classroom friends (they are 20 students in total), and I'd love for her to remember just their faces and literally nothing else. So how many points would this be?
