Barnabas, however much he might balk at having it pointed out, has the social skills of a goat and is clearly unused to functioning without some kind of servant around. On the other hand, unlike Ademnet Barnabas is the sort of man people think twice about attacking--and while Ademnet has every confidence in his ability to finish a fight without help, he'd rather avoid bloodshed altogether until he knows the local rules. For now, they're both in strange surroundings, and their skillsets are complementary. It's as simple as that.
