Can you give an example of a memory where a character might have something to contend with, but it's an empty space? For example, I'm imagining that a character might visit, say, their empty childhood bedroom--but then, what are the things they have to get through to reach the end of the memory?

It's possible I'm overthinking this (or maybe not thinking creatively enough!) but I'm having trouble imagining situations where someone would have to contend with something if there's nothing there, and I think some examples might help me!
