At first Nicholas thinks it might be the Sheriff, and he's not sure if he's relieved or worried to find that the canine across the lobby is larger and greyer than the coyote who so zealously enforces pool law. It has to be a wolf. So that's what one looks like in person.
He should probably be extremely worried about being trapped in a half-intact hotel underground with a large predator. But it's not attacking him yet, which puts it far ahead of the wildlife he last remembers turning up in the town. And it's not trying to arrest him, which puts this encounter ahead of most of his with the Sheriff. So as far as he's concerned, things could go either way.
He doesn't come any closer, but he does crouch down to be closer to eye level. "Hey. You lost?"
It's probably pointless to talk to the creature, but it's not like there's anyone else here to make fun of him for trying it.
