How NPCs Work
NPCs in Well function a lot like video game NPCs. They hold no secrets and can't be interrogated, and you'll find that they have a stock few set of phrases that they use, in addition to standard greetings and goodbyes. They won't say anything beyond these phrases unless otherwise specified in an event post.

They can be killed, and if anyone tries, they'll more or less explode with blood in the most cartoonishly extreme way possible. They'll regenerate after a few minutes like nothing happened, but the mess stays behind for a few hours, so... probably don't do that.

The Receptionist

The Receptionist greets each new guest with a smooth smile and a room key. Perpetually unruffled, he seems to handle every problem with ease. He's available to offer clean towels and sheets, and to provide recommendations for Wellstone's (rather limited) entertainments.

Dialogue:
Welcome to the Staywell Hotel. I have your reservation right here, Name. Your room number is number.
Wellstone's not what it used to be, but we're really working to ramp up tourism. You're here, aren't you?
Don't worry about the storm. It'll blow right through.
The continental breakfast is served from 6:00-10:00 every day.
We're so glad you chose to stay at the Staywell. Enjoy your stay!
What is there to do in town? I'd check out the saloon, and the diner has great food if you want something different. Stay in town, though, it gets dangerous outside at night.

The Owner of the General Store

An affable man with a passion for jam, the owner of the General Store works from dawn to dusk seven days a week. He has a rusty laugh and an easy demeanor, and he's an excellent salesperson to boot.

Dialogue:
Welcome in, kiddo. You let me know if anything strikes your fancy.
You ever tried our special prickly pear jam? Really livens up your breakfast!
It's been my dream to run a store like this since I was a little boy. Just fills my heart right up.
Nothing like a crystal to keep away those rattlers.
If you're heading out of town, make sure you pack your thirst-aid kit!
You heard the one about the quicksand? They say it's always right on time!

The Cactus Pad Saloon Bartender

The owner & bartender stationed at the Cactus Pad has seen it all. She's an excellent bartender, and she'll take any request for a drink, although the menu's mostly tequila and whiskey. Her cocktails are delicious. If you start a barfight, you'll find yourself kicked out onto the streets in short order.

Dialogue:
Welcome to the Cactus Pad. Take a seat, or don't.
What'll you be having?
Don't make trouble and I won't be trouble.
It's getting late. Watch out on your way back to the hotel.
Storm shouldn't be too bad. We're ready for it.
In response to a fight: You keep this up and I'll let the coyotes deal with you.

The Waiter

Every time you enter the Stardust Tavern, the waiter greets you with a cheerful smile and a massive menu which never changes. He seems to be the only employee, but food always gets made, and you can hear clattering in the kitchen. Ask him for the daily special and he'll tell you about a kind of pie which changes every day.

Dialogue:
Hey honey! You seat yourself anywhere and I'll be right with you.
You have got to try the pie today. It's a real banger, if I do say so myself. Oh, I didn't make it, though.
You tried our pancakes yet? They're just the fluffiest things. I could eat 'em all day.
You look a little tired! How about some coffee? It'll perk you right up.
It sure is looking windy out there, but no matter how bad it gets, I'll be here!
Well aren't you cute. How about a milkshake? It's so hot out there, you may as well!

The Gravedigger

The silent watcher in the graveyard, this quiet presence is responsible for keeping the crude graves free of moss and scorpions, and... it's unclear what else. She won't speak, but if you're near the graveyard and being menaced by a creature with intent to harm, she'll down it with a single shot. You can find her keeping graves clear of dust. Some say that when you die, you'll wake with a blurry memory of her body above you, shovel thick with dirt, her hat blotting out the sun.
The Bathhouse Attendant

The bathhouse attendant—sheriff?— has a quiet, dignified presence. He's dedicated to his work, holding towels and running the bathhouse every day, and holding down a seat at the pub every night where he can be seen lapping beer from a tall glass. He's a coyote. A normal coyote who stands on his hind legs all the time and has a gold sheriff badge on his chest, and a stetson hat on his head.

Dialogue:
Woof!
