Honestly it works, cuz Barnabas is a king that opposes the established order of the realm and is seen as a villain by most the other monarchs because of his own revolutionary war. Little do they know he's a villain for a way more legit reason, but still!

Meanwhile, Barnabas wasn't born into royalty, he became a king through conquest. Just a traumatized religious villager with a fragment of a higher being's power freshly awoken in him going on a 16 year conquest spurred by the bloody aftermath of religious persecution, nbd. What's a little war and absolute monarchy for the sake of changing the world, right? Just ignore that he was replacing one system of oppression with a new one.
