2.0 Test Drive Meme

2.0 Test Drive Meme

Welcome to Well! Characters arrive the same way every month. Your character arrives with only a handful of memories, clad in old west style clothes of your choosing, with no items from home. This month, there is a strong possibility that those old west style clothes include a pair of jorts or daisy dukes.

Anyone is free to play on the TDM, but you need an invite to apply. Feel free to use these prompts, and interact with the arrival or locations. NPCs are around, but only say a certain set of phrases. TDMs can be considered game canon.

This TDM takes place from the first week of May onward, and can happen concurrently with other events during May and June. This will be the only TDM for April, May, and June.

Applications are open April 26th until May 1st, and May 27th until June 1st. Invites are available for friends of current players.

All-Night Diner
Content warnings: feelings of euphoria and mild intoxication, exhaustion

There’s banner over the diner's doorway reading Welcome!, with colorful flags drooping in the heat. Inside, the waiter greets you with a wide smile and an announcement:

“Welcome to the Stardust Diner! Pie’s on the house today. Have a seat.”

During the day, the diner is just that: a diner. You can get anything on the very extensive menu, including prickly pear lemonade. The pie is free, and everything else is put on the tab for your room that will never come due, probably. It seems like a shame to eat that pie all alone! Accepting a piece of pie makes you feel like you should share this moment with someone. Luckily all the booths are plush and open, and it’s easy to plop down with a stranger to share this special moment.

At night, the mood shifts. The diner’s neon sign is a beacon against the thick darkness, beckoning you in with blinking lights and a line of text reading FORGET YOUR WORRIES. Inside, country-swing music rolls in time with throbbing red lights. The tables have been pushed aside to make room for a makeshift sticky dance floor, and the atmosphere is intoxicating.

It’s as easy as anything to be swept along with the vibes, the dancing, the intensity of it all. When you start dancing, you really do forget your worries. You forget that you don’t know how you got here and that you don’t may not even know the person beside you; you forget that you’re supposed to be anywhere else except here. Everything feels briefly perfect and beautiful, meant to be, no matter what else is happening to you.

When you stumble outside, it will be dawn, no matter how long you think you’ve been there, and you’ll be exhausted enough to simply curl up right there in the sand and fall asleep. Hope you made a friend kind enough to drag you home, or that someone wakes you up!

tl;dr:
  • The diner is open and the pie is free.
  • If you get a slice of pie, you feel compelled to share it with someone.
  • At night, the diner transforms into essentially a nightclub. The vibes are intoxicating and you can forget all your worries and dance the night away.
  • You can only leave at dawn, and your body will be exhausted. Better get help getting back to your room!

Something’s Coming
Content warnings: blood, blood-sucking, monsters

A few hours after dusk, strange creatures begin to scurry from shadow to shadow, chasing after anything that moves: chupacabras. Large ones. They’re big creatures, the size of large dogs with spikes down their spines and tails, dark and hairless with fearsome teeth. They are everywhere, and they are hungry.

They are indiscriminate in who they try to bite: the biggest among you is just as at risk as the smallest, but the bigger you are, the more of them might come for the fight. No matter where you are, there’s a risk: they seem adept at making their way into buildings. You might find one looming over your bed, resting on your chest, getting ready to bite; one might slip into the diner while you’re dancing and latch on when you’ve forgotten to be concerned.

If a chupacabra manages to bite you, it will suck your blood, and it won’t stop until you’re completely drained unless you do something about it. Having your blood sucked by one is not a pleasant experience, it’s excruciatingly painful and the creatures will do their best to keep you prone while eating their fill. The more they drink, the more exhausted you’ll get, until it’s very difficult to fight them off.

They can be killed or scared off, but the further they are into a fight or into their meal, the harder they are to get rid of. If a chupacabra has latched on to you, you’ll need help escaping!

tl;dr:
  • Chupacabras strike the town at dusk.
  • They want to suck your blood, and are indiscriminate in who they attack. They will try and drain you completely.
  • They can be fought or scared off. It's easier to get rid of them if you have a pal.

The Walls Have Eyes
Content warnings: eyes, trypophobia

There are eyes everywhere. They peer out of cracks in walls, the floor, the grout in your shower, an open cut in your skin. There are even eyes in the craters on the moon, staring down at you unblinking.

These eyes seem familiar, even if you don’t remember them. You feel like you do. You feel a heavy weight settle over you when you look at them, guilt curdling in the pit of your gut.

The eyes belong to someone, or someones, who you’ve hurt or let down. They belong to your greatest mistake, to someone who you left behind, to someone who you regret. The same eyes over and over again, or the eyes of many who you’ve hurt, watching you, judging you, pleading for you to save them or apologize or make up for the mistakes you may not even remember making. You just know that you made them. They eyes don't lie.

The more you ignore these eyes, the more they seem to encroach on you: appearing in the walls, following you around corners, in the creases of your knuckles, the fold of your sheets. They replace the eyes of the people around you, the same eyes staring at you from everywhere you look.

Your skin itches with the constant feeling of being watched. Your head feels tight, and your own eyes feel too full, like there’s too much of you inside your skin. You’d do anything to get away from this feeling.

Soon enough, the mounting pressure explodes: you have to confront them and your guilt and your mistakes, and beg for the forgiveness they’re asking of you. Even if you don’t remember what those mistakes were, or why you should feel guilty, you have to tell someone. If you don't, the feeling will only mount, until all you can see are eyes. Eyes, just eyes.

tl;dr:
  • The eyes of someone(s) who embodies your regret appear in the cracks of the world around you.
  • The more you ignore the eyes, the more of them appear, and the more you feel an intense, heavy sense of guilt.
  • The guilt you feel can be based on things you remember, or things you don't. If it's based on things you don't know, your head will also hurt.
  • The eyes will ease if you admit your guilt, to the best of your ability. Tell someone your guilt, and the eyes will recede.
  • If you don't, your whole world will become eyes.

hallucinogem: (and the joke's on you)

[personal profile] hallucinogem 2023-05-16 04:21 pm (UTC)(link)
[right now, of the things in the immediate vicinity that are unsettling, emerald will take the sickly girl who's trying to help her out over the rapidly-shrinking number of judging eyes any day of the week. it takes a second for her to come fully back to reality, but the tone shift in this woman's voice is helping a surprising amount. it cuts through the noise, and it's easy to listen to maybe because of how insistent it is. maybe it's relatable. maybe emerald's used that tone of voice before herself.]

I have to be happy? [she repeats it like the solution to a riddle and lets a smile creep its way to the corners of her mouth. she can force herself into happiness about as well as she can handle everything else on her own, so it doesn't quite hit her heart yet—but it's a start. maybe because there's an easier emotion to tap into.]

You're talking about doing it out of spite, right? I can do spite. [her smile shows some teeth. she looks ahead of her and the eyes are vanishing even more quickly, leaving behind exactly what should have been underneath them this whole time. and she breathes out.] It sounds like you've got some experience with spite, too.

[personal profile] hallucinogem 2023-05-16 04:40 pm (UTC)(link)
[well, she's missing a lasso and all the other traditional western weaponry (not that she would know much about that), but the girl dolled up like a veritable cowboy doesn't hesitate.]

On it. [she says it without raising her head, but when she does whip her head she sure as hell sees a massive bloodstain leaking through the strangely-bulging blanket.] What the hell happened to you? Do you need a doctor?

[The actual cowgirl would have a blast with the 80s Bowling Alley Chic Western Disaster. Athena, having the girl's attention, shifted the cloth just enough to see the small... Creature that was still attached. ]

I stepped out for a little air and got jumped,

[They explained rapidly, sugar and caffeine bolstering them in the haze of the midnight rave.]

It looks worse than it probably is. I don't feel much of it, and Cryptids-- they're fascinating, but I've got nothing.

[personal profile] hallucinogem 2023-05-16 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
[only one thing around here fits the descriptor of cryptid and can actually jump people.]

So it's still on you?

[at least one of them is approaching this with the right sense of urgency, she thinks. she walks forward and tugs at the bloodstained blanket, trying to at least get this person to face facts. she reaches to her hip for... for something that isn't there, but doesn't let herself be deterred by the discrepancy.]

You dumbass. Let me pry this thing off or it's going to make you bleed to death.
vintagehardmedia: (waaaaaat)

[personal profile] vintagehardmedia 2023-05-16 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I know-- that's why I asked for help!

[They huffed, pale cheeks flushed with both effort and sheer indignation. Despite the attitude, Athena was clearly swaying on their feet enough that the had to brace their free hand against a wall for support.]

I tried to get it off, but I didn't have the tools or the leverage.
hallucinogem: (the secrets of the circuitry mind)

[personal profile] hallucinogem 2023-05-16 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Just stand still for a second.

[emerald is not a doctor, but if she tries to find one, it'll be too late. she yanks the blanket aside and grabs the chupacabra, then wraps her hands around either side of its body. and this tiny girl pulls as hard as her cowpoke arms and legs will let her. she hears the suction let up just enough to know that she won't have any long-lasting purchase doing it this way, and she stops pulling.]

How hard are your abs?

[go with her on this. she's already looking around for a piece of metal or wood or something.]
vintagehardmedia: (cutting wit)

[personal profile] vintagehardmedia 2023-05-16 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
[Okay-- that hurt.

Athena, significantly enough taller than the cowgirl dropped with a gasp when something was pulled loose. Miswired tactile signals sent electric-hot pins and needles surging through their shoulder and spine. Vision blurring, Athena peered at the girl with furrowed brows.

Give them a minute to compute.]

Not that hard, [They said at a slower clip, words starting to slur together.]

But. I've got a lot of metal??

[including the arm that the shoulder was connected to.]
hallucinogem: (poison's in my pride)

[personal profile] hallucinogem 2023-05-16 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
[she stepped away just long enough to grab a plank of thick, sturdy wood, then sized up the person she was trying to save.]

All right. I'm gonna use that as a lever. Hold it still.

[and she slid the plank in on one side, underneath the chupacabra, bracing it on the metal of this person's arm. standing behind them, she counted down from three quietly.]

This is gonna hurt. Three, two, one...

[and she pulled harder this time, prying the chupacabra off like a tick, if someone had never actually seen a tick before. she didn't stop pulling until she was absolutely sure the thing had dislodged completely, in hopes of putting an end to this all at once.]
vintagehardmedia: (sigh)

[personal profile] vintagehardmedia 2023-05-16 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
[A pained yelp escaped from tightly grit teeth despite Athena's best efforts as the beast was dislodged from their shoulder. Disrupting the revelry was the last thing they had wanted and, vision still swimming, Athena owlishly peered around the impromptu club with no small amount of anxiety.]

This-- is too close.

[And, batting the cowgirl away, Athena thrust their false hand over the creature's head and released a shock with enough amps to overclock the creature's nerves.]

We-- we need to get it outside,

[Athena stammered, gasping for breath while they angled their head towards the door they had entered. ]

Before it... It tries anything funny again.

[She smiles a little crookedly and does not say what she already decided to withhold, for the moment at least.]

I know I'm quite a bit older than I look, and you may have noticed, I don't look young. I'm sure I've had a lot of strange experiences I don't recall. Losing memory and context does turn some older people childlike and anxious! Maybe it's just in my nature to be steady.

[ Flynn sucks in a sharp, horrified breath.

He doesn't know what he expected. That she spirited Cecelia away, perhaps, and kept her in a room, or that she let her go or worse, killed her, but—

that's perhaps the worst thing of all, an option too awful to contemplate. Flynn's grip on her shoulders tightens. It's all he can seem to do for a moment.

That's awful. That's... it's just— Cecelia...

[ He's right about beauty - and about the breakfast, too. This one seems to know what he's doing. Ariane smiles, and she feels out of practice with it, somehow, but it's genuine all the same. ]

Sure. Let's start over. [ She leans in a little closer, drops her voice down to a register that can only be called conspiratorial. ] But if I had to guess, I think that if I had met you back home, I would have liked you better because you're the enemy.

[ War is stupid, isn't it? ]

[ That's much better. Jaune wiggles his fingers when his palms are finally empty of bits of wood, and makes a mental note to find a better weapon next time, or to find a pair of gloves.

Which is a little like a kind of promise, or so it occurs to him when she speaks so unhappily of one she's forgotten. That gets him to lift his head, his brows coming together in consternation. It picks at something almost like the tweezers picked at particularly deep splinters, an odd, twisting ache that twists the corners of his mouth as he thinks. ]

I have a promise to keep too, I think. Or something like a promise.

[ Solidarity, again. It seems to be the first thing he reaches for when he's trying to comfort people. ]

I don't think mine is to you, either, but...that's why we have to figure this out, isn't it? So we can keep our promises.
rustedknight: (Default)

[personal profile] rustedknight 2023-05-17 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
It is.

[ The enthusiasm Jaune would typically have for talking about a friend is muted, even with the mental note about the future possibilities of 'Oreos'. The way Yuri talks about this other guy, it doesn't sound like he's sure he can trust him, and that makes Jaune unaccountably wistful on his behalf.

He tips his glass of milk one way, then the other, still contemplating Yuri. ]

It's strange at the same time. Knowing you know someone, but not really how, or why. It's almost like - if I know them, why don't I know how to talk to them? What did we used to do together? How did we even meet? Are we starting all over, or picking up where we left off?
rustedknight: (rusted - 007)

[personal profile] rustedknight 2023-05-17 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Good riddance, and like Jaune even cares about some careless idiot careening around getting herself into situations.

She can get lost. Go fall in a hole somewhere, or something. Slink off with her shoulders crumpled in and no sense of self-preservation to probably trip down a flight of stairs and break her stupid - ]

- you shouldn't get hurt either. [ He mutters, not looking at her retreating back. ] That's also stupid, for the record.
rustedknight: (rusted - 010)

[personal profile] rustedknight 2023-05-17 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
[ Her perspective isn't one that occurred to Jaune before she voices it. He hasn't thought any of this was too good to be true, because it's largely seemed pretty unfortunate, whatever positive spin he's tried to put on it to try to make things easier for her.

It makes him wonder what sort of place she might have come from if a handful of creature comforts and the promise of being looked out for by a community is too good to be true, that there must be another catch somewhere past the lost of their memories and abduction to a strange place.

He watches her eat her pie with a soft furrow to his brow. A feeling he knows enough about now to mark as familiar stirs in him. It's not that she doesn't seem like she can handle herself, or anything like that - she doesn't give off that impression - but everyone can use another set of eyes looking out for them specifically, right? ]

Some people didn't make it. [ He confirms, quietly. ] No one is sure what happened to them, exactly.

But that's not going to happen to us, all right? Because we know about it, now. And if you know about a danger, you can learn to avoid it.

[ Because he's not going to let it happen again, to her, or to anyone else. ]

[ A little smile flickers onto Flynn's lips, there and gone again. He relaxes, at least, some of the tension bleeding from his shoulders. ]

A steady nature is certainly a boon. I, ah, wish I felt a little more steady. It's been difficult to keep a clear head. Is there a trick to it?

Usable information, anyway. I think we're all pretty clear on what our room numbers are at this point.

[Darlington answers their smile with one of his own; it's practiced, polite, but no less genuine for that. If he notices the glassy look in their eyes, he doesn't mention it.

To the question, his eyebrows tick up, just slightly.]

I can't say I saw one, but...I suppose I didn't know to look for waffles, either. Only one way to know for sure.

[He nods towards the breakfast area, a quick bob of his chin.]

It's Athena, right? I'm Darlington.

"Probably for the best. You'll make more friends if you don't go around breaking down doors."

Palamedes stands and lightly brushes the dirt off his trousers, then approaches the newcomer with caution, if with no particular fear. "Goodness, you are new. In that case, allow me to welcome you to Wellstone, for better or for worse." He offers his hand. "Palamedes Sextus."

[personal profile] hellonspectacles 2023-05-18 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
I'm flattered, I think. [Without quite knowing why, the woman's answer makes Palamedes smile.] I have a feeling that no one person can ever be called the enemy, anyway. Anyone who says otherwise isn't to be trusted.

[And maybe that includes the people in power in both their homes, whoever and whatever they may be.]

Still interested in that cup of tea?

Guess we've got to check it out.

[Athena grinned, because taking action was always preferable to waiting around, and trotted on after Darlington.]

I hope you're as darling as your name sounds, [They chattered, the surplus of words at their disposal.]

Not that long. A day or two? Just long enough to explore the inn, [ she pushes away from the counter, rocking back on her heels before straightening her posture, ] and hear a lot about breakfast and some storm that's coming. The only ones who don't seem to be on a script are people like me and you.

[before she started celebrating, she heard this person warn her that it needed to get out, and so she caught herself. right. this was only step one. and if this person could use electricity from their arm, there was part of emerald that wondered why she'd even needed to step in to help to begin with. but there was a much larger part that was still in crisis-solving mode.]

On it.

[she said it quickly, decisively, and grabbed the stunned creature. holding it almost like a football, she rushed outside and flung it off to one side, towards the desert and away from any of the buildings. it didn't get much distance (she wasn't especially muscular in that department), but it just needed to get the message that this was not the right place for it to be.]

[she dusted her hands as she started walking back inside, quickly enough to avoid any other encounters with cabras that chupe. and, breathing just a little heavily, she looked up at this other person with a grin.]

Okay. That thing's gone. Now we really need to get you to a doctor.

... Can't we just get a potion or something?

[But the tall, lanky nerd wouldn't fight if Emerald dragged them somewhere. Athena gathered the table cloth into a bundle and pressed down it onto the oozing bite wound with a deep frown on their face.

There were too many books in the library with this kind of plot, and it usually end badly.]

You don't think that thing was rabid, do you?

[They asked witha wince as they put pressure on the wound.]

Or, tetanus. I don't want to get that one either.
