Share Your Knowledge

It's been nearly 6 months since folks started waking up in this charming little town in the middle of nowhere, and by now, almost everyone has learned something weird about this place. To keep everyone on the same page, spark conversations, and prompt new questions, we're putting up a lore-sharing post!

Feel free to use this post to share what you and your characters have learned, theories they might have about the place they're in, questions they want answered, and anything else you think the rest of town might want to know. Jump on each other's comments, ask questions, whatever you'd like! This is an OOC space but there's a high chance two characters have the same theory and might want to chat about it over tea.

Character: Jaune Arc
Lore / info they've learned: Jaune knows an average amount about the town, what is basically the commonly shared knowledge: the town seems to have reset itself after collapsing, there are strange and inexplicable occurrences in the town, memories can return at seeming random or in relation to specific acts (discovering lost artifacts of your past, viewing your own gravestone) at specific times.
How did they figure this out? Everything but the last Jaune was told by other people, reinforced by his observations. On the topic of memories, Jaune had both examples happen to him directly.
What else do they want to know? Despite not being very good at investigating on his own, Jaune has taken extensive notes on everything he's seen in town and the questions that they raise for him. He's most curious about 1. how they can stop the destruction of the town 2. how they can return home and 3. what is happening with the local inhabitants of Wellstone, who are real and his friends.
OOC or IC theories: Jaune's most concrete theory is that the NPCs are more than they appear. He bases this not on facts he's observed, but what he believes in his heart. Some of his daydreams involve 'rescuing' them from whatever it is that binds them to rote responses and a set routine, or at least determining if they're happy with their lives as they are.

OOC: I've gathered that it's not necessary for characters to kill their own evil doubles to dispel them, and that the NPCs have human nervous systems to go with their human bodies, and those nervous systems can be manipulated from the outside.

oh Flynn SUPER also empathizes with the NPCs—the receptionist annoys him sometimes but for the most part he's worried about them and concerned that they're being held here against their will. He wants to help, maybe this is something he and Jaune have talked about before and can perhaps investigate together???

Jaune is a little shy about his opinions on the NPCs, but with Flynn, he'd absolutely divulge all of his sentimental feelings. I'd love for them to investigate it together, and perhaps Flynn will learn about the lore Jaune has invented for the NPCs, like the normal guy he is.

oh my goodness yes plEASE once we wrap up this thread maybe in cycle 3 we can have some NPC investigation times. Flynn has almost certainly divulged his own sentimental worried feelings so Jaune doesn't have to feel alone in his Concerns

As long as Flynn can forgive Jaune for going to the beach that makes you young I'm so in. Flynn forget about my dramatic age lift we have NPCs to follow around and form parasocial relationships with!

Character: Diluc Ragnvindr
Lore / info they've learned:
Diluc knows the following -

There is a pattern to some events.
The coyote has appeared twice.
Shit deals with memory or discussing things.

Everything deals with emotional vulnerability.
How did they figure this out?
Diluc has theories from observing events for two cycles. He takes some notes but also how people get out of things, is always with help.

What else do they want to know? If there are any hints as to what the doubles really are and their weaknesses.
OOC or IC theories: icly, Diluc is starting to suspect something happened here in this town. It might not be a creature or person that caused this but events or trying to prevent an event.

And he thinks whatever it was. The clues are in the graveyard and maybe in putting together what the town’s people are saying.

And he has noticed that there is an emphasis of important people in their lives needing to be remembered or encouraged to remember.

Lore / info they've learned: The locals explode when they die.
How did they figure this out? She did a murder :)

Lore / info they've learned: Jaune's a poopy head.

Character: Ariane Yeong

Lore / info they've learned: Ariane knows that the town resets at the end of every cycle, and that there are some things in common between the two cycles, such as the doubles, etc. She also knows that the town is capable of erasing memories on the order of decades, and that the Gravedigger is super cool and they're totally going to be best friends one day right right

How did they figure this out? The cycles part she learned from Diluc, everything else is observation or personal experiences through the events.

What else do they want to know? Ariane is especially interested in helping her friends learn more about the town, more out of a desire to do fun friendship activities than anything else. As a little CR hook for anyone who is interested, feel free to assume that she has offered to sketch or paint any NPCs, buildings, or happenings in the town so they can be recorded for posterity and possibly analyzed later.

OOC or IC theories: In general, Ariane is more concerned about what the hell happened to her, in her missing memories, than what happened to the town. Consequently, she doesn't have a lot of theories. If asked, she'll probably just shrug and go "IDK, bioresonance?" This will likely change throughout next cycle as Ariane regains some memories, so stay tuned :)

Character: Palamedes Sextus

Lore / info they've learned:
Pal has been doing a lot of investigating, both in mundane ways and necromancer ways, and our friendly neighborhood mods have been incredibly patient and helpful in explaining what he would find. So he has learned a lot!

- Everything in Wellstone appears to be extremely old, in the hundreds to thousands of years range. This includes objects found in the rifts, buildings, gravestones, and bones. Buildings in use tend to be younger than buildings not in use, though the exact age is hard to determine.

- Notably, though, the well in the graveyard is weird. It’s impossible to determine its age, and individual stones seem to be wildly different in age.

- Additionally, post-cycle reset, the age of all buildings fluctuates.  For a few days, the ages seem to swing wildly: one thing will feel brand-new, another age-old, and then they'll switch the next day. After about a week, things settle, and they'll feel exactly like they did before.

- There are various traces of people (human and non-human) having been in Wellstone before! Many of the objects in the rifts seem to have belonged to them. They are a wide variety of ages, from children to elderly, and both human and non-human. In fact, it’s clear that there used to be a lot of life in Wellstone, and now it’s (almost) all dead, and everything reeks of death. Spoooooky.

- The ghosts that were actively haunting Staywell during Cycle 2 desperately want to communicate. They have told Palamedes and Cecelia that they do not come from Well and that the town will “end.” There are dozens, maybe hundreds of them, and they do not have names.

- The concierge (and presumably other NPCs) seem to be biologically normal humans. But something is off about them!

How did they figure this out?
- Building/object age stuff Pal determined via his psychometric powers, which he began re-learning during Cycle 2 (ooc details here, here, and here)
- Ghost stuff he learned while conducting a seance
- Concierge stuff learned during this interrogation.

What else do they want to know?
LITERALLY EVERYTHING. At this point, Pal is particularly interested in figuring out more about the people who were in Wellstone previously and what happened to them, as well as figuring out the nature and construction of Wellstone itself.

OOC or IC theories:
At this point Pal suspects that
- Lots of groups of people have been taken to Wellstone previously and they all eventually die
- The NPCs were once people like them, but have been stripped of their person-ness
- Wellstone itself is a pocket universe or bubble constructed by a powerful being who is doing experiments on them

Character: Cecelia Ardenbury
Lore / info they've learned: In conjunction with Pal's findings they worked on together, she's found that despite the "resets," the loops are not complete resets. Gravestone epitaphs change, some buildings are absent (re: the jail, noticing that with Yuri in cycle 2), and NPC lines alter by month. She knows there are latent spirits (or at least memories of them?) stuck here, but their intel is hazy.
How did they figure this out? Investigation! Working with Pal, with Darin, with Yuri & Flynn & Diluc and such!
What else do they want to know? E v e r y t h i n g .
OOC or IC theories: She's of the mind this is a pocket dimension, but not a precise time loop. She's certain magic is involved to some degree.
